Why Use Canvas Photos – Advantages, Experiences And Tips

Why print photos on canvas? What advantage does this have over other media? In addition to the photo on canvas, there are numerous other printing options that online printers offer. I would like to briefly explain here why I can recommend a print on canvas and why I do it myself again and again.

The printing technology and the variants of different materials have improved significantly in recent years and the prices for production have also become affordable for private individuals. The product selection in the print shops has also increased.

If you would like to have your digital photos printed and, for example, use them in a larger format for your own home as decoration, you can choose from a variety of papers and other materials. The printing of your own photo on Alu Dibond, Forex, acrylic glass, real glass, canvas and other media are available to you in addition to the traditional photo paper.

Why photos on canvas – the advantages

A few years ago I had a series of pictures printed on canvas for a large photo exhibition with other photographers. During the exhibition, a great advantage over other materials, such as acrylic glass, became apparent. The photos on canvas showed no reflection of light or other disturbing elements. The images of most of the other exhibitors were partly affected by unfavorable lighting and reflections.

No annoying reflection

The print on canvas, on the other hand, literally absorbed the light from the spotlights and the colors and contrasts were expressed more strongly and more lifelike.

Here one can clearly speak of an advantage of canvas over many other materials. Since then I have mostly used photo canvases for exhibitions and always have a photo book with me. Because printed photo books always make a good portfolio for on the go or as a small gift.

Stable and practical

Another advantage of the photo on canvas is the practical handling and stability. The wooden frame and the stretched canvas are sturdy fabrics that resist light bumps, fingerprints or scratches well.

I’ve had bad experiences with Alu Dibond. Slight dents on the edge, which already occurred during delivery. This fragility of the material in terms of costs keeps me from having prints made on this material in the future.

Of course, you should also avoid handling your canvas too hard. And it is also urgently necessary to keep dirt away from the canvas surface. Where, on the other hand, a glass or acrylic glass surface has a slight advantage!

Why photos on canvas? = Ready to hang

But despite everything, a photo on canvas is – ready to hang! It is therefore not necessary to frame the prints and provide them with a passe-partout, as is the case with “normally” printed images on photographic paper.

Thus, the price of the canvas is also the final price. There are no costs for frames and possibly professional frames. Unless you want the canvas framed. Of course, this possibility also exists.

canvas surface

The surface structure of the canvas is definitely recognizable in a printout. However, this does not reduce the sharpness of the image. Here is a detail from a photo on canvas:

The structure of the canvas gives the picture a warm touch and gives the photo something of a painting. From a distance, the fabric is no longer recognizable.

The right material for the canvas

The quality of the print and the level of detail are comparable to high-quality photo paper. However, it always depends on the print shop which material it uses.

With my prints, I pay very close attention to color fastness, workmanship, quality, cut, etc. Over time, one print shop has turned out to be good for me, through which I create my prints for customers as well as for exhibitions.

I have had some canvases for almost 10 years now and their color fidelity has remained. So even in the medium to long term you have something of a photo on canvas.
